PowerCenter

Informatica PowerCenter is a data integration platform, primarily used for extract, transform, load (ETL) operations. It facilitates the movement and transformation of data between various sources and targets, enabling businesses to build and manage data warehouses, real-time analytics systems and data governance initiatives.

A single point of control for Informatica data pipelines

The Tidal adapter for Informatica PowerCenter lets you add advanced scheduling features to your setup and combine multiple schedulers into one centralized console. It makes it easy to define, launch and monitor workflows in Informatica PowerCenter, improving automation and integrating smoothly into an enterprise-wide scheduling system.

The adapter integrates with Informatica PowerCenter version 10.5 and above using Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) requests to ensure efficient communication, data transfer and workflow management between the adapter and Informatica PowerCenter.

To use this adapter, start by setting up connections to your Informatica PowerCenter environments. Then, create PowerCenter jobs just like you would with other jobs. You can easily choose folders or workflows and monitor job execution in real-time from the Job Activity pane.

Once the job is complete, the adapter updates the Job Activity pane with the final status, which helps manage any dependent jobs and run details. It also allows you to cancel, abort or rerun workflows directly from Tidal to give you more control over your environment than other standalone scheduling tools.

What the adapter enables

The Tidal adapter for Informatica enhances Informatica automation and integrates fluidly with an enterprise scheduling environment, allowing your organization to:

  • Add complex scheduling functions to your Informatica solution
  • Consolidate multiple schedulers into one centralized console
  • Define, launch and monitor Informatica PowerCenter workflows

How it works

The adapter integrates with PowerCenter using Informatica’s Load Manager SDK, a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) that facilitate interaction with the PowerCenter Server for workflow management. Via this programming interface, the adapter communicates with the Load Manager to run and monitor workflows.

To provide access to Repository data, such as Folder, Workflow and Workflow Task definitions, the adapter also requires a database connection to the PowerCenter Repository Database. Database connectivity is provided via Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) programming interface.

An Informatica job definition refers to workflows retrieved from the PowerCenter repository and provides for parameter value overrides for scheduling variables. Based on defined scheduling criteria, the adapter submits a PowerCenter workflow to be run directly by PowerCenter’s Integration Service. Job execution is authenticated against PowerCenter through associations between Tidal runtime users and PowerCenter namespaces, roles and users.

Once a workflow has been submitted, the Adapter monitors the workflow and its tasks until completion. During execution, the Job Activity pane shows real-time workflow and task status details. When the job has completed, the Adapter returns its final status and run details to the Job Activity pane. The adapter lets you cancel, abort, recover or rerun workflows from Tidal.

Tidal and Informatica integration FAQs

  • What is Informatica PowerCenter?

Informatica PowerCenter is an extract, transform, load (ETL) tool offering on-premises and cloud-based environments. These enable users to load data into a centralized location, such as a data warehouse or operational data store (ODS). Extract data from multiple sources, transform the data according to business logic you build in the client application and load the transformed data into file and relational targets.

  • What is the difference between Informatica and Informatica PowerCenter?

Informatica PowerCenter and Informatica Cloud (Informatica Intelligent Cloud Services, or IICS) are both data integration platforms from Informatica, but they differ in their deployment models and focus. PowerCenter is a traditionally on-premises solution, requiring dedicated infrastructure, while IICS is a cloud-native platform, offering flexibility and scalability.

  • How do I connect to Informatica PowerCenter?

Tidal by Redwood, an advanced workload automation platform, integrates with Informatica PowerCenter through a pre-built adapter that utilizes Informatica's APIs to manage PowerCenter workflow scheduling and execution. This integration allows you to centralize control, visibility and management of Informatica data integration processes in Tidal.
